Help add the final textured details to a collaborative map of Montrose and the surrounding landscape.

Drop in at any time between 10am and 4pm for a free embroidery workshop with artist Carrie Fertig, helping complete The Map of Health of the Sublime before it is taken to Montrose Beach on Saturday 22 August.

Learn or share skills in 3-D and stumpwork embroidery as we add raised, tactile elements to the map, including shells, rocks, leaves and other details inspired by the natural world.

Drawing on traditional goldwork techniques, often found on ceremonial military uniforms, Carrie will guide participants in adapting these skills using sustainable, planet-friendly materials.

You are welcome to bring small scraps of thin leather, thread, fabric or fine netting, particularly materials that have personal meaning. These fragments will help embroider a little of Montrose, and a little of you, into the finished map.

No previous embroidery experience is needed. You can stay for a short time or settle in for a longer session.

Carrie Fertig

Socially Engaged Interdisciplinary Artist

Carrie works across materials, performance, film, sound and storytelling, creating spaces where people can explore their relationships with themselves, one another and the natural world.

Since 2022, she has led Health of the Sublime, a project mapping people’s lived experiences of wellbeing in nature through the lens of climate change. Her work helps participants develop creative skills, deepen their connection with nature and recognise the power of their own voices.

Health of the Sublime is funded by Creative Scotland, in partnership with Mearns and Coastal Healthy Living Network, with support from The James Hutton Institute.

Continue the Project at Montrose Beach

The collaborative map will be taken to Montrose Beach on Saturday 22 August, where it will be shared through stories and poetry.

The beach event will be captured by drone and ground-level cameras and will become part of the Health of the Sublime exhibition at The Barn in Banchory, opening on 25 September and running until 24 October.
