About LandxSea
What is Montrose LandxSea Film Festival?
LandxSea (pronounced Land by Sea) is Scotland’s environmental film festival and the only film festival in Angus.
Each September, we bring powerful stories to the big screen exploring the connections between land, sea, climate, culture and community.
Our aim is to spark conversation, bring people together and inspire ideas and action through the shared experience of cinema.
Throughout the year, LandxSea Monthly brings festival favourites, previews and timely environmental films to Montrose Playhouse.
When and where is LandxSea 2026?
LandxSea Film Festival takes place from 11–13 September 2026 at Montrose Playhouse in Montrose, Angus.
You can attend a single screening, spend a full day with us or join us for the whole festival weekend.
What happens during the festival?
LandxSea is a full weekend of films, guest conversations, creative events and community connection, all centred on people, place and planet.
You can expect:
- Documentaries, animation, archive films and international premieres.
- Filmmaker Q&As, guest introductions and lively discussions.
- Creative workshops, exhibitions and family activities.
- Live music, performances and social gatherings.
- The joyful — and bracing — Montrose Beach Dook.
Is LandxSea for me? Can I come on my own?
Absolutely. You don’t need to be a film expert or know everything about climate and environmental issues.
Our audiences include local residents, families, students, artists, outdoor enthusiasts, filmmakers, scientists and people who simply enjoy a good story.
Many visitors attend on their own, especially for their first LandxSea event. The festival is friendly and informal, with plenty of opportunities to chat in the cinema, during Q&As and in the Reel Bar.
Some people come for the environmental themes, others for the filmmaking, and many simply enjoy the atmosphere.
Planning Your Visit
Do I have to attend the whole festival?
Not at all. Many people come for one film or make a day trip, while others spend the whole weekend exploring screenings and events.
Build the festival experience that works for you: join us for an evening screening, a family activity, a full day or the entire weekend.
Are Q&As included, and how long should I allow?
Yes. When an event includes a filmmaker Q&A, introduction, performance or guest conversation, it is included in the advertised ticket price.
Each event page lists the film running time and details of the accompanying live event.
Please allow some additional time for guest conversations and cinema turnaround, particularly when planning several screenings on the same day.
What happens if an advertised guest cannot attend?
Guest appearances are offered in good faith but may occasionally change because of travel, work or personal circumstances.
We will update the event page whenever possible, but a change to the advertised guest does not normally affect the screening itself.
Any tips for my first visit?
- Arrive a little early, particularly for popular screenings.
- Stay for the Q&A or conversation after the film.
- Try something outside your usual viewing habits — unexpected films are often festival highlights.
- Leave time between events to get a drink, chat and meet other visitors.
- Ask the LandxSea or Playhouse team when you need help choosing a film.
Tickets & Programme
Are tickets on sale, and how do I book?
Festival film screenings and events are now open for booking through the Montrose Playhouse box office.
You can book online, by telephone on 07395 071 636, or in person at the cinema box office.

Are free or reduced-price tickets available?
Yes. We want LandxSea to be open to as many people as possible.
- Reduced-price tickets are available for seniors and students.
- Everyone aged 18 and under can attend festival film screenings free of charge.
- Carers and essential companions can attend free of charge.
- Free Community Tickets are available when cost is a barrier.
Advance booking is still required for free tickets so that your seat is reserved.
Do you offer ticket bundles and festival passes?
Yes. A six-ticket bundle and an all-festival pass are available for visitors planning to attend several screenings.
Bundles and passes are valid for one seat at each selected screening. They cannot be used to book several seats for the same event.

Where can I find the programme guide?
Printed programme guides will be available at the Montrose Playhouse and selected local venues from 17 August.

Are free events drop-in or bookable?
This varies by event. Each listing will clearly say whether advance booking is required or whether you can simply turn up.
Even when an event is free, advance booking may be required when capacity is limited.
Access, Age Guidance & Families
Is the festival accessible?
Montrose Playhouse has:
- Blue Badge and accessible parking.
- Step-free access and lifts to all floors.
- Accessible toilets on each floor.
- A Changing Places facility.
- Wheelchair spaces in each screen.
- Hearing loops.
- Subtitled screenings where available.
- Live captioning for festival talks and Q&As.

Do you provide accessible programme guides?
Yes. Our 2026 Festival programme is available in HTML, PDF, Word, RTF, TXT, and EPUB formats, with clear headings and simplified formatting. These options are designed to support screen-reader and low-vision users.
Can children and young people attend?
Yes. Each film and activity has clearly displayed age guidance, and everyone aged 18 and under can attend festival film screenings free of charge.
Advance booking is required, and children taking part in activities must follow any adult-supervision requirements listed on the event page.

Where do film age ratings come from?
Some independent films and premieres do not yet have an official BBFC classification.
Where necessary, we work with Angus Council to provide local age guidance before public exhibition. The applicable rating or guidance is displayed on each event page.
Please contact us when you would like help deciding whether a film is suitable.
Do you provide content guidance?
Where appropriate, we include information about potentially sensitive, distressing or unexpected content on individual film pages.

Venue, Travel & Food
What is Montrose Playhouse like?
Montrose Playhouse is a community-owned cinema and arts venue created inside the town’s former public swimming baths.
The cinema has comfortable screens with standard seating, sofas, love seats, wheelchair spaces and front-row footstools.
The Playhouse was a finalist for BIFA’s UK Cinema of the Year in 2025.
How do I get there, and is parking available?
Montrose is served by regular direct rail services from Dundee, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, with connections from elsewhere in Scotland and the UK, including direct LNER services to and from Kings X.
The Caledonian Sleeper between London Euston and Aberdeen also stops at Montrose, offering a convenient overnight option for travel to and from London.
Montrose railway station is approximately a 10-minute walk from the cinema. A taxi rank and local bus stops are also available near the station.
The Playhouse has free parking behind the building, with additional street parking in the surrounding town centre.
Does the venue serve food and drink?
Yes. The Reel Bar at Montrose Playhouse serves coffee, snacks, meals, local drinks and cocktails.
Food and drink can be enjoyed before or after screenings, or inside the cinema.
Schools, Filmmakers & Getting Involved
Do you have a Schools Programme?
Yes. Schools at the Festival offers free screenings and interactive learning opportunities for local young people.
We work with educators to connect film with climate literacy, creativity, storytelling and young people’s experiences of the world around them.
