Join a gentle beach procession celebrating awe, wellbeing and our connection with the natural world.
Join multi-disciplinary artist Carrie Fertig for a participatory event at Montrose Beach, exploring experiences of nature, community and the Sublime.
Together, we will carry The Map of the Sublime along the beach. Created through embroidery workshops in Montrose and beyond, the textile map brings together people’s memories, stories and connections with place.
Participants will be invited to share stories, reflections and poems about moments of wellbeing, wonder and connection with the natural world.
You might reflect on Montrose as it was in the past, as it is today or as you imagine it in the future. Stories and memories from further afield are also warmly welcome.
This is a relaxed, participatory event. You are welcome to join the procession, share something with the group or simply walk and listen.
Free event. All welcome.
RSVP encouraged — this event involves carrying large map artworks on the beach, so knowing numbers in advance really helps us plan.
Please note: This event will be filmed. The resulting film will become part of the Health of the Sublime exhibition at The Barn in Banchory.
About the Artist
Carrie Fertig
Socially Engaged Interdisciplinary Artist
Carrie works across materials, performance, film, sound and storytelling, creating spaces where people can explore their relationships with themselves, one another and the natural world.
Since 2022, she has led Health of the Sublime, mapping people’s lived experiences of wellbeing in nature through the lens of climate change. Her work helps participants develop creative skills, deepen their connection with nature and recognise the power of their own voices.
About Health of the Sublime
Health of the Sublime is a multi-year creative arts project mapping lived experiences of wellbeing in the natural world through the lens of climate change.
The film created at Montrose Beach will become part of the project’s exhibition at The Barn in Banchory, running from 26 September–24 October.
Participants are also warmly invited to attend the exhibition opening on 25 September, 7–9pm.
