LandxSea teamNet-working with a difference: learn traditional skills, meet new people and create your own willow fish.
Join Stewart Troup, Forest School Leader at Sticks and Stones Forest School in Pitgarvie Woods near Luthermuir, for a hands-on workshop inspired by the skills and stories of life at sea.
A former skipper, Stewart will introduce the knots used for making and mending fishing nets, sharing practical techniques alongside stories from his time working in the North Sea.
Participants will also create simple fish shapes woven from willow branches. The finished nets and willow fish will be displayed at Montrose Playhouse during LandxSea Film Festival, 11–13 September 2026, before being available to take home afterwards.
No previous experience is needed.

About the Workshop Leader
Stewart Troup
Forest School Leader and Former North Sea Skipper
Stewart is a Forest School Leader with Sticks and Stones Forest School, based in Pitgarvie Woods near Luthermuir. A former skipper, he brings practical knowledge of traditional net-making and mending, together with first-hand stories of working at sea.
Workshop Tickets
All PoP Shop workshop tickets are £5.
We want our workshops to be affordable, welcoming and open to as many people as possible. Every place is subsidised through donations and festival fundraising, and your £5 ticket helps cover the tutor, venue and materials.
Spaces are limited, with most workshops able to welcome only 10–20 people. Please book only when you are confident you can attend. When plans change, let us know as soon as possible so that we can offer the place to someone else.

Free places are available through our Community Ticket Fund. When the workshop cost is a barrier, please contact us — we want these activities to be open to everyone.
