Drop in between 10am and 4pm for a free embroidery workshop with artist Carrie Fertig, helping add the final touches to The Map of Health of the Sublime before it is taken to Montrose Beach on Saturday 22 August.

Learn or share skills in 3-D and stumpwork embroidery as we add raised, textured elements to the map — shells, rocks, leaves and other details that are just begging to be touched.

Using techniques inspired by traditional goldwork, often found on dress military uniforms, Carrie will guide participants in transforming these skills through sustainable, planet-friendly materials.

You are welcome to bring your own small scraps of thin leather, thread, fabric or fine netting , especially materials that mean something to you. These fragments will help embroider a little bit of Montrose, and a little bit of you, into the map.

This drop-in workshop is part of a larger project that will continue on Montrose Beach on Saturday afternoon, where the map will be shared through stories and poetry. The beach performance will be captured by drone and land cameras, and will become part of the Health of the Sublime exhibition at The Barn, Banchory, opening on 25 September and running until 24 October.

About Carrie Fertig

I am a socially-engaged interdisciplinary artist working with materials, the human heart, my body, nature, and the voices of many, human and otherwise. I make safe spaces, environments, and situations for transformation, where folk can examine their deepest selves with creative outcomes. I make flameworked glass: repeatedly repurposed in performance, film, sound works, and vessels for stories. Since 2022 I’ve run Health of the Sublime, mapping the lived experience of wellbeing in the natural world through the lens of climate change, planting skill seeds to heighten participant connection to nature and handmaiden the power and agency of their creative voice.
