In rural Devon, two neighbouring farmers — both called Derek — have become unlikely representatives of a much bigger argument about land, food, nature and change. Derek Banbury runs an intensive dairy farm and sees no reason to stop. Derek Gow has taken a radically different path, transforming his fields into a haven for beavers, wild boar and native species.

What begins as a local feud soon opens out into something richer and more revealing: a portrait of a countryside under pressure, where tradition, livelihoods, biodiversity and belonging are all up for debate.

James is an award winning director, with accolades including Rose D’or for Secret Millionaire and the Broadcast Press Guild Award for Drag Queen Faking It. James pivoted from making docs for terrestrial TV to features in 2018 with his first documentary Organ Stops: Saving the King of Instruments about a group of eccentric pipe organ enthusiasts saving instruments from closing churches. Screened at film and music festivals across the US and UK, it was bought and shown by the BBC on Christmas Eve 2022.
