A New Kind of Wilderness

A New Kind of Wilderness

This powerful Norwegian documentary follows the Payne family, living off-grid in harmony with nature—until tragedy forces them to face a changing world. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema-Documentary at Sundance 2024.

Synopsis

On a small farmstead in the lush Norwegian forest, the Paynes live a purposefully isolated life; aiming to be wild and free, and living sustainably in harmony with nature. Maria and Nik, along with their four children Ulv, Falk, Freja, and Ronja are self-sufficient and resourceful. They practice home-schooling and strive for a closely-knit family dynamic that beats in rhythm with the natural world around them. When an unforeseen tragedy strikes, the Payne’s idyllic world is upended, forcing them to confront a new and uncertain life in modern society.

Director Silje Evensmo Jacobsen spent several years immersed in the off-grid world of the Paynes to put together this intimate, thoughtful documentary.
