Watership Down (1978)

Watership Down (1978)

A small band of rabbits flee their doomed warren in search of safety, freedom and a place to call home in the landmark 1978 adaptation of Richard Adams’ unforgettable classic, newly restored in 4K.

The rabbit warren is going to be destroyed. Fiver knows it, feels it with a certainty he cannot explain, but few will listen. So he and his brother Hazel lead a small band of rabbits out into the unknown, crossing rivers, roads and open country in search of somewhere safe to begin again.

Based on Richard Adams’ beloved novel, Watership Down remains one of British animation’s most singular achievements: a hand-drawn epic that treats its animal characters, and the world they inhabit, with total seriousness. Its landscapes are pastoral and perilous; its vision of nature is beautiful, unsentimental and sometimes terrifying. For many, it is remembered as a childhood rite of passage. Seen again, it feels just as alive to questions of home, exile, leadership, violence and survival.

Beautiful, brutal and newly restored in 4K, this is a landmark film whose impact has never really faded.
