In Uummannaq, North-West Greenland, children carve Indigenous words into the sea ice, naming what is being lost and imagining a future without ice.
In Uummannaq, North-West Greenland, children carve Kalaallisut words into the sea ice: words that describe frozen land, sea, winter and a way of life in retreat. Each word names something being lost. Together, they generate a new one: “sikoqqinngisaannassooq” — the possibility of a future without sea ice.
