Get to know David Hughes, the second of our two new Trustees at LandxSea, joining us to support us on governance, strategy, and oversight, helping us steer the ship as we grow the festival.
Introduce yourself!
I've worked in quality management and assurance for the majority of my career, both in the pharmaceutical and energy industries, with a focus on making sure appropriate governance is in place and in use to deliver the desired results and driving improvements where gaps exist. Over the last decade I have been an active member of two local charities in Montrose and hope to bring what I have learned to support the ongoing successful delivery of the LandxSea film festival.
Favourite environmental film?
One of my stand out nature films was PATRICK & THE WHALE which was shown as the finale of the inaugural LandxSea film festival. As well as being amazed by the cinematography, Patrick's relationship with one of the whales (Dolores), and images of these wonderful creatures, I was also captivated by Patrick Dykstra's Q&A session afterwards where he talked at length about his interactions with the sperm whales and the idiosyncrasies of the pods he met around the world, from their language to what interested or scared them. For me this really enhanced not just the film, but the whole film festival, as each Q&A session does after every film shown, and is still something I find myself talking to friends and colleagues about.
Part of the role you're most looking forward to?
I am looking forward to all aspects of helping deliver this fantastic festival, and all that comes with it, by applying my experiences to the role.
Fun fact about you?
When I was 21 I took a submarine trip in Loch Ness. There is very little down there, and unfortunately, there was no monster sighting.
A quote that inspires you?
"In theory, theory and practice are the same; in practice they are not" —Yogi Berra (professional baseball catcher).
For me this highlights the reality of work and projects where there are additional challenges in the execution that cannot always be predicted upfront and planned for.
We're delighted to have David join us at LandxSea!
